Compliance (for Managers)

As manager, you must ensure your department is in compliance with state and federal laws. The following information provides detailed information regarding compliance at the university.

Institutional Compliance Overview

The goal of the university's Compliance Program is to ensure that university operations consistently comply with state and federal laws, The University of Texas Board of Regents', The University of Texas System, and The University of Texas at Austin policies and procedures.

Compliance Activities

Laws and regulatory activities that impact the university and university employees include:

  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, as amended
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADAAA)
  • Homeland Security (Form I-9, E-Verify)
  • Selective Service Registration
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Workers' Compensation
  • State Ethics Statement
  • Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)
  • Outside Employment for Non-Exempt employees who do not execute contracts/financial transactions
  • Outside Employment for Exempt, some Non-Exempt and Faculty

Tracking and Monitoring

The university developed tracking and monitoring systems to ensure that compliance is thorough and to mitigate the risks of legal and policy violations. HR audits high-risk areas to ensure these tracking and monitoring systems provide the necessary assurance for thorough compliance.

Required Posters

Generally, compliance posters and notices must be displayed or posted in conspicuous places where they are easily visible to all employees (e.g., the employee break room). Posters and notices may be downloaded/printed on the Required Posters page.
