Understanding Institutional Compliance

You should make sure that your department is always in compliance with state and federal laws. The following information provides details about compliance in your workplace.

Institutional Compliance Overview

The university's Compliance Program's goal is to ensure that the university's operations consistently comply with state and federal laws, The University of Texas Board of Regents' rules and regulations, The University of Texas System policies and procedures, and The University of Texas at Austin policies and procedures.

Human Resources' (HR) role is to ensure that all human-resource functions and activities comply with applicable laws, policies, rules, regulations and procedures. The HR compliance liaison works with the university's institutional compliance officer.

Compliance Activity

The many laws and regulatory activities that impact the university and university employees include:

  • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, as amended
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
  • Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA)
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Homeland Security (Form I-9, E-Verify)
  • Social Security Numbers Training
  • Selective Service Registration
  • Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
  • Workers' Compensation
  • State Ethics Statement
  • Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA)

Tracking and Monitoring

As a result of the institution's commitment to comply with all applicable laws, policies, rules, regulations and procedures, the university developed tracking and monitoring systems. These systems ensure that the university's compliance is thorough and mitigates the risks of legal and policy violations. HR audits its high risk areas to ensure that these tracking and monitoring systems are providing the necessary assurance for thorough compliance.
