UTemps Benefits

Because UTemp employees are not part of the regular working force of The University, they are not eligible for complete benefits. Some exceptions apply.

Summary of Benefits for Temporary Staff

For new short-term UTEMPS:

If your total employment is for at least 20 hours per week and equals 18 weeks, you will be enrolled in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and required to contribute 8% of your eligible earnings towards the plan.  For more information about TRS, please review the TRS Handbook available at https://www.trs.texas.gov/TRS%20Documents/benefits_handbook.pdf.

You may also be eligible to participate in the university’s employee group insurance program if:

  • Your scheduled weekly hours are for at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 continuous calendar days. 
    • If between 20-29 hours per week, you will be emailed an invitation to enroll in insurance plans at a premium cost.
    • If 30 or more hours per week, you will be automatically enrolled in medical, prescription, basic life, and basic accident insurance plans at no premium cost and will be emailed an invitation to enroll in other insurance coverage at a premium cost.
  • You do not meet the requirements in the previous section, but your scheduled weekly hours are for at least 30 hours per week and at least 90 continuous calendar days. 
    • You will be automatically enrolled in medical, prescription, basic life, and basic accident insurance plans at no premium cost.  You will also receive an email an invitation to enroll in other insurance coverage at a premium cost.
  • You are paid for at least 1,560 hours during a twelve-month measurement period.
    • You will be considered a full-time employee for any employment during a subsequent twelve-month stability period and will be automatically enrolled in medical, prescription, basic life, and basic accident insurance plans at no premium cost.  You will also receive an email invitation to enroll in other insurance coverage at a premium cost.

For UTEMPS with 20 scheduled weekly hours (SWH) extending beyond 18 weeks:

UTemps are eligible for the following:

Staff “A” parking permit, jury duty, time off to vote, military leave (without pay), unemployment compensation insurance and overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week with prior approval (at time and one-half).

UTemp employees are generally not eligible for the university's group insurance, promotion/transfer programs, holiday pay, sick leave, or paid vacation. Some exceptions apply.
