The LBJ School of Public Affairs and the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at The University of Texas at Austin are honored to be hosting the 3rd annual Juneteenth Freedom Summit: Freedom Dreams: Reimagining Culture, Politics, and Law. This event, led by Dr. Peniel Joseph, the CSRD's founding director, serves as a multigenerational convening of activists, scholars, and community members to come together to make sense of the rich history that produced Juneteenth; the complex political tapestry that has led to this era of political and racial reckoning; and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead to build the Beloved Community in Texas and beyond.
The teaching of American history and the celebration of our national diversity and search for justice is under attack, which lends more urgency to an earnest reckoning with the meaning of Juneteenth.
This event will feature live music and refreshments.

Mindset Matters: How to Develop a Growth Mindset Around Giving and Receiving Feedback
If you're like most people, giving or receiving feedback in the workplace can be uncomfortable, but there are things you can do to make it less stressful, as research shows that constructive feedback can be a catalyst for growth.
Join us in-person on Thursday 5/25 at noon. This presentation focuses on developing a growth mindset in the workplace regarding giving and receiving feedback. It covers the benefits of a growth mindset, strategies for constructively giving feedback, and techniques for receiving feedback with an open and receptive attitude. The presentation also emphasizes the importance of psychological safety and active listening in creating a positive feedback culture. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to approach feedback conversations with a growth mindset and the tools to foster a workplace culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Virtual Event: Borderlines of the Conquest of Mexico
part of the Distinguished Visiting Speakers in the art of the Spanish Americas series
March 18th at 5 p.m.
2021 marks the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztec capital of Mexico-Tenochtitlan to an army of both Spanish and Indigenous allies. This panel assesses the effects of such a cataclysmic event by focusing on murals produced in Yucatan and maps that depict the north of Mexico and what is now the southwestern United States. The creation of both murals and maps challenge narratives of a “spiritual conquest” and the “hispanization” process, and provide insights into how maps that represented the expansion of the Spanish empire also allowed imaginings of the original homelands of the ancient Mexica. This event is free to attend with registration.

Dr. Slaughter is the first woman to serve as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State (2009–11) and served as dean of Princeton University’s School of Public and International Affairs (2002–09). Let’s get REDI – Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Workplace

For over a decade, organizations have made a commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) in their workplace. More often than not, these initiatives fall short of changing the organization’s norms and practices, and ultimately fail. That’s because it’s not possible to have true diversity and inclusion without racial equity. Rising inequity remains a complex problem that organizations need to tackle intentionally and thoughtfully.
When organizations don't prioritize racial equity alongside diversity and inclusion, the quality of experience (belonging) for marginalized and oppressed groups suffers immensely. While everyone in your organization might be receiving the same experience, certain groups do not derive the same satisfaction level. Research suggests there's more racial segregation in U.S. workplaces today than in the 1970s; and also indicates that anti-black hiring practices and other forms of institutional privilege are as prevalent today as in the 1980s. In his new book, THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. (Basic Books; March 31, 2020), acclaimed historian Peniel E. Joseph offers a paradigm-shifting dual biography the leaders, presenting a more nuanced narrative that pushes readers to reconsider these two leaders and the era they came to define. Joseph depicts both men not as antagonists, but as revolutionaries who confronted the same problem from two different perspectives. As Joseph explains, examining their political lives next to one another provides a more complicated, but ultimately more satisfying, understanding of these men and the times they shaped.
Peniel E. Joseph is the Barbara Jordan professor of political values and ethics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. He has written several previous books on African American history, including Stokely: A Life. He lives in Austin, Texas.

COVID-19 and the Impact on the Latinx Community

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a disproportionate impact on the Latinx community in Texas and across the nation. They are facing more severe health and economic consequences than the non-Hispanic White population.
This webinar will address the impact of COVID-19 on the Latinx community, including the risk factors for and effects of the disease, the financial consequences and resources available, how Latinx people with disabilities are affected, and focus on where we go from here to address these disparities and improve outcomes for the Latinx community.
Speakers include:
Dr. Amelie Ramirez, Professor and Director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research at the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio, will be speaking about the health impacts of COVID-19 on the Latinx population, including risk factors and co-morbidities.
Veronica Cool, CEO and Founder of Cool and Associates, a management consulting firm, will be speaking about financial consequences and resources available to the Hispanic community during the pandemic
Renee Lopez, Project Consultant at SAFE Disability Services, will be speaking about the COVID-19 impact on people with disabilities, particularly within the Latinx community.

Dr. Joseph holds a joint professorship appointment at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the History Department in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. He is also the founding director of the LBJ School’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. His career focus has been on “Black Power Studies,” which encompasses interdisciplinary fields such as Africana studies, law and society, women’s and ethnic studies, and political science.

Her recent book, American While Black: African Americans, Immigration, and the Limits of Citizenship, is a timely analysis of how racial black identity, American heritage and notions of citizenship shape our contemporary political and policy landscape. In this moderated conversation with the LBJ School's Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto, she will discuss how public policies such as the "war on drugs" have entrenched inequitable systems and what policy change is necessary for black Americans to not just survive but thrive in the United States.
