This event, led by Dr. Peniel Joseph, the CSRD's founding director, serves as a multigenerational convening of activists, scholars, and community members to come together to make sense of the rich history that produced Juneteenth; the complex political tapestry that has led to this era of political and racial reckoning; and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead to build the Beloved Community in Texas and beyond.

But, like clicking the dials on an optometrist’s phoropter, the conventional lens through which we view gender and gender equality can be changed. Hear from three speakers who will share practical suggestions, strategies, and resources to equip us with actionable steps toward building inclusive mindsets and practices around gender equality.

Virtual Event: Borderlines of the Conquest of Mexico

part of the Distinguished Visiting Speakers in the art of the Spanish Americas series

March 18th at 5 p.m.

2021 marks the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztec capital of Mexico-Tenochtitlan to an army of both Spanish and Indigenous allies. This panel assesses the effects of such a cataclysmic event by focusing on murals produced in Yucatan and maps that depict the north of Mexico and what is now the southwestern United States. The creation of both murals and maps challenge narratives of a “spiritual conquest” and the “hispanization” process, and provide insights into how maps that represented the expansion of the Spanish empire also allowed imaginings of the original homelands of the ancient Mexica. This event is free to attend with registration.

Speakers: Dr. Amara Solari, Professor of Art History and Anthropology at Penn State University and Dr. Danna A. Levin,  Professor of History and Historiography at Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco.

Moderator: Dr. Susan Deans-Smith, Associate Professor, History, UT Austin.

Let’s get REDI – Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Workplace

Friday, October 30th, 12 pm (noon)

For over a decade, organizations have made a commitment to diversity and inclusion (D&I) in their workplace. More often than not, these initiatives fall short of changing the organization’s norms and practices, and ultimately fail. That’s because it’s not possible to have true diversity and inclusion without racial equity. Rising inequity remains a complex problem that organizations need to tackle intentionally and thoughtfully.

When organizations don't prioritize racial equity alongside diversity and inclusion, the quality of experience (belonging) for marginalized and oppressed groups suffers immensely. While everyone in your organization might be receiving the same experience, certain groups do not derive the same satisfaction level. Research suggests there's more racial segregation in U.S. workplaces today than in the 1970s; and also indicates that anti-black hiring practices and other forms of institutional privilege are as prevalent today as in the 1980s. In this session you will hear:

  • The difference between equity and equality
  • Benefits of having racial equity, diversity and inclusion (REDI) in your workplace
  • Best practices for prioritizing racial equity alongside diversity and inclusion

Exclusive insights from one of the City of Austin's racial equity champions, Keree Brannen

The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.

presented by Athenaeum of Philadelphia In Partnership with the Membership Libraries Group

October 1, 2020

In his new book, THE SWORD AND THE SHIELD: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. (Basic Books; March 31, 2020), acclaimed historian Peniel E. Joseph offers a paradigm-shifting dual biography the leaders, presenting a more nuanced narrative that pushes readers to reconsider these two leaders and the era they came to define. Joseph depicts both men not as antagonists, but as revolutionaries who confronted the same problem from two different perspectives. As Joseph explains, examining their political lives next to one another provides a more complicated, but ultimately more satisfying, understanding of these men and the times they shaped.

Peniel E. Joseph is the Barbara Jordan professor of political values and ethics at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin. He has written several previous books on African American history, including Stokely: A Life. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Brave Conversations About Race presented by Skillsoft

Wednesday, August 5, 2020 – 10 a.m. CDT

In the past few months, there have been strong calls for organizations to join the movement in the fight against racial injustice, and many have started to answer this call. Please join us for a complimentary webinar with diversity and inclusion experts Enrica N. Ruggs and Derek R. Avery as they discuss the importance of explicitly talking about race in the workplace and provide advice on how to begin productive conversations. They will discuss factors to consider when planning these conversations, such as audience, timing, and purpose, as well as how to structure, facilitate, and navigate a conversation about race. They will provide tips on how to have brave conversations that address tense aspects of race as a way to build competency around what inclusion really looks like in organizations.

In this webinar, you will gain:

  • A better understanding of how to plan conversations around race.
  • A guide to structure and frame initial conversations about race at work.
  • Tools to use to ensure that race conversations are successful.

Leadership Talks: Psychological Safety

Tommy Darwin headshot

Date: May 22, 2020

Time: 9:30-10 a.m.

Location: HR Facebook*

Join us as we live stream our fourth episode of Leadership Talks with our special guest, Tommy Darwin.  The focus of the discussion will be psychological safety.

Leadership and Psychological Safety:  A leader's first job is to nurture psychological safety — trust and relationships that help individuals feel connected to each other, willing to speak up, and most importantly willing to be curious, try new things, and learn quickly when things don't work. At all times, psychological safety is essential to innovation, performance, and resilience. In a crisis, psychological safety is essential to survival.

Tommy Darwin is currently the Director of the Intellectual Entrepreneurship Program in the Moody College of Communication, and in his 20 years at UT have held positions in the Graduate School and DCCE and worked directly with a number of programs across campus. He developed and delivered programs and graduate level courses in the broad areas of entrepreneurship, leadership, community, and organizational change. Tommy also works with individuals and groups to build their resilience, ability to engage opportunities, and adapt effectively to changing situations.

Webinar: Presence - The Leadership X Factor

May 11, 2020: Noon - 1 p.m. CDT

Let’s talk about Leadership Presence! In the last month, we have seen multiple DO’s and DON’Ts when it comes to leadership. This time we are partnering with Rich Handley to deconstruct what makes up Leadership Presence by utilizing

Emotional Intelligence.

Emotionally/socially intelligent leaders are more influential because they project more strongly and positively through more powerful Leadership Presence, and that can be quantified through measuring Emotional/Social Intelligence. Leadership Presence is the spirit or aura projected by leaders: the very thing that impacts a leader’s ability to do their job – influence, train, and develop people! Emotionally Intelligent leaders have a higher impact through stronger Leadership Presence: Vision, Projection, Control, and Connection

About the Speaker: Dr. Rich Handley is president and founder of EQ University. He is a pioneer in bringing emotional intelligence to the workplace and has more than 22 years’ experience in corporate applications of emotional intelligence. He has spent those years instructing Fortune 500 firms, academic institutions, federal and state agencies, the U.S. Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies to leverage emotional intelligence in areas such as employee selection, organizational and leadership development, employee development, and sales training.

Three webinars this month on different aspects of online presentations and PowerPoint.

Awesome Makeovers from PowerPoint Slides that Suuuuuck

May 7, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

There are many ways to wreck a PowerPoint slide. Behold these before-and-after gems from some of the worst train wrecks we've ever seen. Out in the world, where 65 million PowerPoint presentations are created each day, we are asked to design presentations every single day without any real design experience. No wonder “Death by PowerPoint” is in everyone’s vocabulary.

This session will not show you how to become a brilliant designer; that is an affront to the people who really are. More important, this session will help you get by with the skills that you do have, by showing you makeovers of slides that do not require a degree in the arts, and in fact were performed by a member of that massive majority not possessing one.

These are before-and-after examples of real slides, created by real people, for real circumstances. They carry the hope that you will watch them and think to yourself, “Hey, I can do that, too.”

  • When and how to illustrate a slide
  • How best to utilize white space
  • Using transparent shapes—best problem solver ever
  • When to animate and when not to
  • Decluttering and deuglifying

Powerpoint Slide Design for Non-Designers

May 20, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Anyone can create stunning PowerPoint slides, without any design experience or ability! You'll discover techniques that help your audience understand and remember your points more clearly. Best of all, they're easy to incorporate into your slide preparation.

Takeaways will be:

  • How to customize presentation colors to maintain branding and avoid adjustments of every slide (save time!)
  • How to format the slide master to get maximum consistency in less time
  • The easy, research-based Tell 'n' Show(SM) method that will take the guesswork out of designing clear slides that trainees will understand and remember
  • The 4 layouts that always look good, so you have a repertoire of great PowerPoint slides you can always draw on
